Moly Mosquito, 1993

Lon Pelton's 13-foot-long scrap metal mosquito sculpture appeared in the middle of night in September 1993. It was Pelton's unusual and eye-catching way of protesting the Town's decision to stop spraying for mosquitoes. An empty propane tank forms the body, with a flagpole as the tail. Black refrigerator Freon tanks, painted with a spot of silver, serve as the eyes. Steel gate-like structures were used for the wings. Legs and antennae were crafted from inch-thick steel reinforcement bars. After surreptitiously leaving it behind Town Hall, Pelton later hosted a protest parade with Moly leading the way and then permanently installed it on the pond.
